QUESTION No.
Differentiate between hearing and listening;
what interferences (both external and internal)
might affect the way you listen?
Listening
and hearing can be defined by different scholars as follows
According
to Kadeghe (2017:166), listening is one of the language skills which you should
master, others are speaking, reading and writing, listening is considered to be
one of the most important parts of the oral communication.
According
to Babita (2013), listening is the key to receiving message effective, also
listening is a skill of language, it requires a desire to understand another
human being an attitude of respect and acceptance and willingness to open one’s
mind to try and see things from another point of view.
Generally
listening is ability to accurately receive and interpret message in the
communication process it involves identifying the sounds of speech and
processing them into words and sentences.
According
to Babita (2013), hearing referred to the response caused by waves stimulating
the sensory receptors of the ear, it is physical response, hearing is
perception of sound waves, you must hear to listen but you need not to listen
to hear.
According
to Kadeghe (2017), hearing is a passive act a mere reception of sound.
Generally hearing defines only the physical measurement of the sound waves that
are transmitted to the ear and into the brain where they are processed into
audible information.
There
are several differences between hearing and listening as follows bellow:-
Listening
is a conscious choice that demands attention and concentration while hearing is
passive occurrence that requires no effort.
Listening
is a skill which allows one to make sense of and understand what is being said
while hearing is a physical ability without any effort.
Listening
uses other sense of organs such as hearing, seeing and sometimes the sense of
touch too. While hearing uses only one of the five sense of organs which is
hearing.
Listening
is a voluntary action while hearing is simply that action of perceiving sounds
by ear (involuntary).
Listening
is a skill where by a person need to learn it. (Not everyone has the ability to
listen) while hearing everyone can hear unless there is physical disability.
Apart
from above differences between listen and hearing, the following are
interferences of listening, both internal and external.
Physical
or environmental interferences, these are the obstacles which effect listening
and in most situation they are case to correct, problem of hearing, use of
microphones which do not project as it supposed to be heard, noise, if it is
difficult to see the speaker or if there is something more interesting to look
at the room is too hot or too cold, bad ventilation example smoke atmosphere,
the lighting too bright or too dim and smells.
Mental
or psychological interferences, wondering mind or in attention (fact, the brain
can process over 500 words at a rate of 125 to 250 words per minute, anger,
frustration, status differences.
Physiological
interferences, this includes tiredness, headache, hearing impairment,
discomfort, pain, poor eyesight.
Linguistic
interferences, occur when person produce words with more than one meaning. Example
includes complex vocabulary, complex sentence, delivery too fast, delivery too
slow, delivery too loud, bad organized materials, jargon (specialist language).
Perceptual
interferences, social or cultural background differences, appearance of speaker
(mannerism).
Content
interferences, when subject of the discussion does not interested it can
interfere listen, also speaker goes on for too long, someone hear it before,
content is too difficult, content is repetitious.
Therefore,
listening and hearing are words which are seemed to be similar but they are differ
as explained above. Also in order to be a good listener there ways to follow
such as stop talking, focus on the content, be polite (don’t interact the
speaker), maintain eye contact to the speaker.
